莱斯利·尼尔森原名Leslie William Nielsen，1926年2月11日生于加拿大萨斯科彻温省Regina，父亲是一名加拿大骑警。第二次世界大战末期，为了远离战争，逃避服兵役，父亲极力怂恿他加入娱乐圈，遂进入加拿大国家艺术学院进修广播专业。
毕业后前往纽约寻找机会。
1954年莱斯利以银幕处女作《恐怖的决定》开启了长达四十多年的演艺生涯，起初定位于英雄人物形象，但二十几年始终默默无闻。80年代开始尝试喜剧路线，80年代末至今已出演了《白头神探系列》、《马固先生》、《绝命错杀令》等一系列经典的喜剧作品，其以名人和名片为搞笔对象的喜剧风格已在当今影坛独树一帜。
曾先后与Monica Boyer、Alisande Ullman及Brooks Oliver有过三段婚姻，但均以离婚告终。
